My Process.

I've photographed pretty much all of my life - at the age of 10 I became the family photographer when it was discovered that I didn't cut the heads off people in the photos - and was privileged to be accepted into Brooks Institute of Photography when I graduated High School. I've always wondered what I'd do with my photography and throughout my career in the movie business have continued to photograph the world around me, and when I've traveled.

The onset of the pandemic provided me the time to experiment and see what I could do with my photography. How could I work with it? How could I add new textures and dimensions to it? Inspired by graffiti street-art in Europe, I tried several painting techniques, stencils, and more. I found that Block Printing gave both a structure, and abstract quality, that really appealed to me.

Starting with one of my original photographs, I have it printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Ultra-Smooth paper. I hand-carve a linoleum block, choosing a flower or tree whose shape and context works with the image. Using water-soluble oil inks, I pick a color palette of 3 to 5 colors, mixing and blending them before applying them to the block. Then block-by-block I apply that to the photograph. I create two to three monoprint pieces at a time.

Each monoprint is unique due to a number of factors. Since I'm using many colors to ink the block, the colors change over each piece. And there have been times when I've decided to change the orientation of the block or try a different block altogether! So each original piece is just that, a monoprint that is individually unique!
